***UPDATE****
After many years of ups and downs, hope and doubt, excitement and harsh realities, we are finally a huge step closer to having a shelter our animals deserve. Having to say goodbye to the plan of building our dream building because of the ever rising costs, we switched gears to find an alternative that fit better into our budget but still would provide our animals with an enhanced level of care and comfort.
It is with a huge smile and sigh of relief that we can finally announce this building is now officially ours!
We are excited to finally be able to get rolling on the construction process and move to our new location on Magee Rd as soon as possible.
We would also like to thank everyone for your support and encouragement, it has been a long process and we wouldn't have been able to do this without each and everyone of you!

Building A Brighter Future
Our current shelter was built in 1993, through dedicated fundraising and help from the Town of Gander. It was a huge step up from the tiny shack we started out with, however as time has changed, so has our needs. In need of repairs and lacking in space, a new shelter is something our board, employees, volunteers (and the animals too I'm sure if they could talk) have dreamed of.
This dream started to become a reality, after receiving the sad news that two of our long time supporters had passed. The late Ron and Sonya Lyttle, of Traytown, bequeathed to our shelter a sum of $562,000. Wanting to make sure the donation honors the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Lyttle, we've decided building a new shelter in their name would be the perfect way.
Our goal with this new shelter is to provide a welcoming environment to animals, adopters and visitors alike, providing the same great level of care in a more spacious, inviting and convenient building. With new features like an indoor dog exercise area, that will not only help our animals receive more exercise in the winter months, it will serve as a training area and will be useful for potential adopters to meet and get to know a dog one on one.
With the added space, we are hoping to invite schools and children's organizations to our shelter, for opportunities to interact with our shelter animals and to learn about humane treatment.
We are set to start construction shortly and have started to fundraise for the remaining funds required to cover the estimated costs of the new Gander and Area SPCA building. We've had a successful ticket sale for two WestJet tickets, bringing in approximately $6,000, and Gander CO-OP has pledged $10,000! As well we've had $5,000 donations from DMG Consulting and The Gander Vet Clinic and a $2,500 donation from Jerry's Car Sales!
If you would like to make a donation to our new building fund, or if you would like to help fundraise, please give Bonnie a call at (709) 651-3002 or email [email protected]. A list of donors will be publicly thanked on our website and any donation of $2,500 or more will be publicly displayed proudly outside of our new building.
